The Home of Geography has been born thanks to an agreement between IGU and Società Geografica Italiana, and thanks to a money contribute of IGU, two rooms offered by SGI and not forgetting a substantial contribute of the Roman Municipality.
In 2005 the Executive Committees of IGU and SGI decided to close the serie of the Home of Geography papers Newsletters, and open a new series of e_Newsletters; as planned, the e_Newsletters appeared quarterly.
Following the Corresponding Members Action Plan
, the e_Newsletter should have been distributed by e-mail also to all the Corresponding Members.
In fact, there were quite no Corresponding Members, as their only benefit was limited to receive the IGU annual printed reports; very nice, if not because these reports usually appeared with some years delay (nowadays, thanks to Secretary General Mike Meadows, the delay ha been canceled). So, by my side and in agreement with IGU President in that time, the late Adalberto Vallega, I began sending the Newsletter to all the people who asked me, and my informal mailing list is still growing.
Furthermore, many Commission's Chairs diffuse the Newsletters to their own list, and now we have an appreciable degree of globalisation.
The e-Newsletters can be downloaded both, in .docx and in .pdf format. The first eight issues have been translated in French, but since the 9th only the minutes of the EC Meeting are translated (if not in the same issue, in the following). After a while, and thanks to Mexican colleagues, a Spanish version is usually following.
After some years there was no more money for the running of the HofG: in 2010 the SGI took back the first room used since 2000 to host the HofG, and also the second have been taken back in 2011. President Abler willing to maintain in life the HofG and I was available to continue the website and editing the Newsletter. So began the New Series, still appearing regularly, every theree months.
Let me stress that, ever since, all the work is done im my home, on my working table, with my old computer and scanner. My term as IGU Vice President came to an end in Krakow 2014, and I am glad for being still operating in the wide Geographycal field.
The presence of Franch mother tongue speakers in the actual IGU EC made it possible to have the Franch translation of their Meetings together with the English version, so both the (official) languages are now available and distributed to the HofG's mailing list.
