International Seminar co-sponsored by the IGU Commission on Gender and Geography

The Commission on Gender and Geography co-sponsored a stimulating seminar at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, February 22-25, 2006. Under the leadership of Professor Maria Dolors-Garcia Ramon and colleagues in the Gender Research Group of the University, speakers explored international directions in the developments of gender research, focusing on the theme "Geography and Gender Worldwide: Questioning the Anglo-American Hegemony."
Support for the seminar was provided by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Catalan Geographical Society, the Catalan Institute for Women, the Spanish Ministry for Science and Technology, the Spanish Institute for Women. Geographers from Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Ghana, Hungary, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, and the US presented regional assessments.
Commentaries were offered by scholars from Greece, India, Israel, the Netherlands, Spain, and the US. While an array of commonalities run through the work, it is also clear that local political and cultural contexts, colonial heritages, international economies and politics, and disciplinary structures and cultures are key in shaping the extent and nature of the field. Papers from the conference are being edited for a monographic issue of Belgeo.
